Answers To All Your Questions

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

In Las Cruces, NM

45 minutes north of El Paso, TX

About 4 hours south of Albuquerque, NM

About 4 hours East of Tuscon, AZ

Our pups have been transported all over the US!

HOW BIG WILL THE PUPPIES GET?

Our labs are the field type so they are smaller than the English type. Depending on the breeding, the males will be around 70-95 lbs. and females will range 50-65 lbs.

Our English Cockers will range from 20-40lbs.

Pups will more than likely be same size as their parents. Weights are noted on dog descriptions on litters.

We recommend following feeding recommendations on the back of your dog food bag. Overweight dogs can develop joint problems. Make sure you evaluate your dog to make sure they are not overweight and overeating. Labs are always hungry, but that doesn't mean they need to be fed!  We do not recommend "free feeding" your puppies! Split their meals into 2-3 feedings a day.

ARE YOUR PUPPIES REGISTERED?

Our dogs are AKC registered. When you purchase one of our pups you will receive AKC Paperwork. Our pups come with Limited Registration (please visit www.akc.com for more info.) Full registration with breeding rights will be available at times. Contact us for info or let us know if you would like a breeding prospect.

DO YOU SHIP PUPPIES? DELIVER?

We ship and deliver! We will personally fly/drive and are willing to deliver ourselves or can meet at nearest airport. If you decide to go with a transportation company, please do your research to find a trustworthy company. We do know transporters personally, just reach out if you have any questions. If you would like for us to deliver your puppy, please discuss with us when placing a deposit. If we meet part way we charge $.85 per mile (anything over 600 miles will add a $160 overnight fee). We have the best flight nanny and travel buddies that can help with transportation usually at a lower cost than you coming to us! Price usually ranges $300-$900 depending on where you live and if you choose ground or flight transportation.

HOW DO I ADOPT ONE OF YOUR PUPPIES?

Start by reading our website and Facebook page which will answer many of your questions. Next, please call or text us Caity: (575)649-7434, Scotty (575)640-1879 or e-mail us at highbrassgundogs@gmail.com to let us know what you are looking for. We are happy to answer your questions and will probably have some for you too. Once you are certain you want one of our puppies (and we are certain you will provide it with a good home) you may fill out an application on our puppy page and send a deposit to hold a currently available puppy or a spot on our waiting list for a future puppy.

We place families on our waiting list in the order deposits were received.  Once you have selected your puppy detailed information will be emailed to you about your new bundle of joy before time to go home!

Once puppies are born, we will post pictures on our website and Facebook page. Pictures will be updated at regular intervals so you can watch your puppy grow. Puppies will have dewclaws removed in the first few days. Before they go home, they will get dewormed and have first shots. For the safety of our puppies, we ask that you not visit them in person until after shots are given. We are very protective of our puppies and want to minimize any potential exposure to dangerous diseases like Parvo.

Our puppies are raised in our home with much human handling so they will be well socialized when you take them home. We are always available for questions to help make the transition from our home to yours as easy as possible.

WHAT DO THE PUPPIES COME WITH?

Registration papers, dewclaws removed, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, a small bag of current puppy dry food, microchip, feeding/safety instruction. Our cockers will come with tails docked.

WHEN CAN I PICK UP MY PUPPY AND WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Puppies must be weaned and eating dry kibble before they can be released. This typically happens between 6-8 weeks. We reserve the right to keep a puppy past 8 weeks if we feel it is small and needs more time to wean.

If you have seen a pup online and want to purchase him/her we will reserve them in the order of deposits. If you are the first deposit and want to wait to pick out your pup in person you're welcome to do that once they're ready to go home. Please understand there are others waiting to pick as well.

If you have a deposit on a pup and cannot pick your pup up before or at 8 weeks of age (whenever pups are ready) the next deposit/s will have a chance to pick out their pup. We cannot hold your pup past 9 weeks of age. We do our best to give you a heads up so you can plan accordingly.

Please remember these are babies with immature immune systems. We ask that you not take your puppy to places like Petsmart, dog parks, hotels or anywhere where unknown dogs have been until they have completed all vaccinations. Your vet can tell you when it is safe to take your puppy in public.

A crate or basket is useful to carry the puppy home in. Some puppies get car sick so it may be a good idea to bring puppy pads or paper towels and trash bags. Remember it is not safe to stop roadside with a young puppy. If you have a long drive plan on disposing of waste when you stop.

If you are flying with your puppy you will need an airline approved carrier (available at most pet stores, Chewy, or Amazon).

WHAT COLOR WILL MY PUPPY BE?

We have the possibility for all colors of labs (yellow, black, chocolate) minus a dilute color. Yellow may have some fox red in them. Our available puppies page will have more details.

English Cocker colors will vary. Please know that roaning and ticking will vary in some pups and doesn't show until a later age. Again, please understand that we have a waitlist of people wanting a pup based only on personality. If you are interested in only a particular coat color or pattern you can place a deposit for a good chance at getting what you want. We usually have a few deposits before breeding our females and puppy picking goes in order of deposits. We like for everyone to pick their puppy by the age of 6 weeks to get health certificates in place.

Please know that the coloring is sometimes unpredictable, and we cannot make any guarantees. We always do our best and want you to be happy with your new best friend.

WILL MY LABRADOR POINT?

Our labs are bred to point and come from "pointing" labs. Some are born with the instinct more than others. Our sire is from one of the few kennels who are a part of the APLA. We feel pointing is a great quality hunting quail here in the south west. Our labs occasionally are caught pointing quail naturally even just in the yard. Our pups from past litters have also pointed and it's an amazing sight to see! We've also been hunting where other hunters will ask " Wow is that a pointing lab?!" We have definitely intentionally bred for the point and only breed "Pointing Labs", but it's something we can't always guarantee.  Labradors were originally a retrieving breed and that's definitely a given.  How your lab turns our really depends on the training you do with it once you take him/her home.

ARE YOUR DOGS HEALTH TESTED?

Our labs are tested CLEAR for the common diseases associated with the lab breed (such as EIC and CNM).  All labs have also tested clear for the dilute gene. Field Cockers are health tested and have tested clear for PRA, FN, AMS, and EIC. We also do hip/elbow testing through OFA or Pennhip.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DOGS?

There are different types of Labrador Retrievers. Our dogs are the American/Field type and are bred for hunting, agility, dock diving, field trial, just to name a few.

Same goes with English Cocker Spaniels. Our Cockers are "working cockers" not American or Bench. That doesn't mean these dogs aren't great family/companion dogs.  It means they have the energy and stamina to last out in the field and do best having a job. Basic obedience training is important for lifelong success.

We suggest learning about the Labrador and Field/Working Cocker breeds before deciding on adding one of our pups to your home.

Our English Cockers do not need to be hunted to be successful. They do wonderful at scent work and love the outdoors. They are great dogs and love space to run around and use their noses. They are keen to please and would be thrilled with a job no matter what it is.

Our cocker spaniels are like potato chips, you can't have just one. These dogs have addictive personalities. You have been warned!

COAT AND MAINTENANCE?

Labrador Retrievers have an under coat and do well with brushing. They are a large dog so do expect some brushing/shedding, but maintenance is low.

Field Bred ECS coats vary in length and feathering. Brushing will keep any matting at bay. Trimming feathers on legs and feet does help keep grass, etc. from sticking to their coat. We use Show Sheen (found at Tractor Supply for horses) to keep their coats soft and supple so if they do run into grass or stickers, it will not stick or is easy to remove.

Ear infections are sometimes a problem with any breed. We have not had trouble with our ECS ears. We do check for stickers after hunting our dogs so they don't get inside our dogs ear canals. If your dog has ear problems, seek your local vet for easy recommendations to fix.

Occasional nail trims are helpful and a bone here and there for clean teeth is a great idea!

ARE YOUR DOGS GOOD WITH CHILDREN? PUPPIES BITING?

Our dogs are wonderful with our children. We have rules set in place with our kids and they know how to properly take care of puppies and adult dogs. Our girls are very gentle with our dogs and know how to handle each dog to the best of their ability. Our daughters know to give all puppies and adult dogs their space. They know to respect our dogs and not push them out of their comfort zone. It will be YOUR job as a new dog parent to teach your CHILDREN to respect your puppy or dog's space. We cannot stress this enough!

Puppy biting and mouthing is natural behavior in young pups especially during teething. This is a phase and will pass. Redirecting your pup with a toy and helping them "hold" a toy is a wonderful training tip.

I UNDERSTAND YOUR DOGS ARE WORKING BRED. ARE THEY OKAY FOR FIRST TIME DOG OWNERS & NON HUNTING HOMES?

Cockers are a very intelligent breed and are bred to work closely with their owner, flushing and retrieving game.  They can be very easily trained and fulfilled without working out in the field. A tennis ball and a whistle go a very long way. Because they are intelligent and energetic means that they need firm boundaries and high expectations placed on them in terms of good manners and basic obedience. Some cockers are somewhat lazy and some are higher energy. We as the breeder try to place pups in the homes where the they will thrive with what genetics they carry. A higher energy cocker may not be suitable for a pet home if their needs aren't taken into account. If you have a relaxed cocker that loves walks and training, they can come home and switch off snoozing on the sofa and be happy just like that.

We get asked all the time if our cockers do well in non hunting homes and the answer is, YES! We love to hunt, but we are just like everyone else that doesn't hunt when it isn't hunting season! Our hunting season typically lasts less than half the year. The other half our dogs enjoy being couch potatoes and going for a Pup Cup at our local coffee shop!

We have placed dogs that go on to live in apartments or small backyards with college students and they have done extremely well. The basic obedience that you do with your dog is very helpful. Letting your puppy know what is expected of them early on will set them up for success and most of the time less is more! Every dog has a personality and energy level of their own. You can help redirect or control what comes out of your dog with some exercise and mental stimulation. We suggest not to rush or overthink things, and the bond is the best thing you can do with your new dog!
